Quailfeather started rapidly licking the kit until it started breathing, then he moved onto the next one. That's when he smelt the blood "No!" he yowled and rushed to his mate's side.

Horseflower closed her eyes shut tight, and then she managed to whisper. "Quailfeather, I think... I think..." she paused, unable to fninsh her sentence.

"Does anyone know about herbs?!" Quailfeather yowled.
Then Poppylight ran back into the nursery, her two kits waited outside, she had a few raspberry leaves in her jaws "Eat these, that's what Foxdapple gave me at my kitting" she mewed.

Horseflower obiediently chewed on the bitter-sweet leaves, swallowing the juice. "I do feel I bit... calmer... but... but..." she gasped, and cried out as another kit slid onto the moss. After a few deep breaths, she knew she had finished. But she felt weak, and ill, and lost of life. "Quailfeather... please... listen close... listen closely to me."

"I'm listening" Quailfeather whispered while Poppylight started to lick the third kit.

"I... I'm not going to make it." She gulped, staring with intense emotion at Quailfeathers eyes. "I... I love you."

"You have to make it! For our kits, and for me, you have to pull through" Quailfeather mewed.

She nodded. "I'll... try"

Foxdapple broke into a run, worried for her clan. She was getting close to camp. Then the tang of blood hit her nose and she heard tiny pitiful mews from the camp. Then it hit her. Horseflower's kitting! And it was going badly.

Horseflower tried to calm herself down. The wind was blowing in her direction and over the blood she could scent the faint smell of Robinflight. "I can do this," she told herself quietly. She knew there was no more kits to come, but she was still in a lot of pain and blood was still flowing freely.

Foxdapple ran into camp and made a beeline for the nursery, assessing the situation she mewed to Quailfeather "I need cobwebs, and marigold for the bleeding, Thyme for shock and I think that's it" she mewed.
Quailfeather ran off to find the herbs.

Horseflower knew that the chances of her pulling through were slim, no matter how hard she tried. All that she was worried about was that her kits were safe. And she knew that they would be, now that Robinflight was here.
She bent over, her abdomen lurching in pain, and started licking her kits, cleaning off the sac so they could breathe. Slowly she guided them to her teats, but she could tell they already knew the way.
Who will look after them if I am gone? she thought.

Quailfeather ran back into the nursery with a wad of cobwebs and some marigold, he dropped them at Foxdapple's paws and ran back to fetch the thyme.

Horseflower knew the names she wanted for her kits. She leant up to Foxdapple. "Ask Quailfeather what names he likes. I... I want the name Fallowkit..."

(just as a reminder, you liked Dawnkit for a she-kit. Fallowkit is a tom)

Foxdapple nodded "Quailfeather, come here" she whispered.

Quailfeather crouched down beside his mate "What is it?" he asked softly.

"Quailfeather... I just want you to know... I love you. And tell my kits... Fallowkit and, whoever you decide to name the she-kit... that I love them just as dearly. And I will always be watching them... for eternity and beyond..."
And with that she took her last dying breath.

"No Horseflower!" Quailfeather collasped into tears "no, no, this can't be true.."

Hacklefrost rushed into the den, smelling the vile scent of blood. "What's happened!?" she yowled, but as soon as she lay eyes on the scene she could answer that question for herself. "NO! MY SISTER!" No one could hold her as she burst through ttrying desperatly for a pulse. "Horseflower, no no no, you have to be okay... no... no."

Quailfeather pressed his head onto Horseflower's "Please wake up... please..." he sobbed.

Horseflower felt strange. She felt no physical pain, but yet she did, it was pain that almost felt as though it were coming from someone else. Slowly, her hearing came, and she thought she could hear wailing in the distance. Two cat's wailing. She gasped, and opened her eyes. "Quailfeather, Hackfrost!" But what she saw was not what she was expecting. She saw her own body before her, limp, lifeless. Her mate and sister were crowding her body, while Foxdapple licked her kits clean. She stood near them, but felt so far away, like there was some invisable barrier. "Quailfeather," she called, no hiding of the desperation in her mew. "Hacklefrost..."

Foxdapple padded over to the two mourning cats, "her spirit lives on," she whispered and gazed up at the space above Horseflower's body, "I can sense it".

"Horseflower," Hacklefrost whispered, "Why did you have to leave? Leave your father, your mate, your sisters, your kits, and your clan..."
Hacklefrost felt a tear fall out of her arm and onto Horseflower's limp body. "Who will look after the kits?"

(I was thinking that Honeyfrost should be their sister? And their mother could have been called Heatherheart and their father is Heronstar. All H's!)

Honeyfrost ran back into camp, she had been out hunting when the ground had shook and was worried for her clan.

Sappaw followed after Heatherheart. She sniffed the air and tensed. "I smell blood."

Heronstar pricked his ears, straining to catch the sound over the panicking crowd of cats. He heard yowling from the medicine cat's den. "Heronstar what's wrong?" Said Heatherheart, Hersonstar's mate. "I'm not sure. I think... I think it's Hacklefrost."
Other cats were starting to stir, realising that something was going on.

Honeyfrost nodded and hared towards the nursery.
